Program Overview

Thornhill Community Hockey League program is a great way for boys and girls to experience recreational hockey. Our House League’s main focus is providing a great atmosphere for players to enjoy the great sport of hockey. There is no body contact in our house league divisions.

There are no municipal restrictions to play hockey in the Thornhill Community Hockey League.

  • To introduce children ages 4 years old to a fun physical activity of hockey.
  • This will be done through hockey skills and drills and some scrimmages.
  • For the first half of the season, qualified instructors work with the coaches and players.
  • Participants should be able to stand on skates and be able to move about without assistance. This is a hockey skills program, NOT a learn to skate program.
  • Parents are encouraged to come onto the ice to help out.
  • Mites program runs once a week for approximately 20 weeks, from mid-October to end March.
  • Will run primarily on Weekends
  • Each session is 50 minutes in length.
  • All skaters must wear a full hockey equipment

Registration fees for Mites include hockey jersey, socks, insurance, year-end party, award & pictures.

In the Tyke division, the TCHL’s strong emphasis on skills development continues. The concepts of positional and team play are also reinforced, while players of like ability continue to play against each other in games.

The Tyke division will play cross-ice.

  • Players are evaluated according to ability at skills evaluations held at the start of the season.
  • Players are divided into three lines (A, B & C) based on these skills evaluations and teams are then formed.
  • Teams have one game and one practice per week.
  • Schedules are provided at the beginning of the season.
  • Depending on the number of teams in this division, each team will rotate through the time slots for games and practices.
  • Games are 50 minutes in length.
  • 1st period 10 minute 2 minute buzzer stop time.
  • 2nd period 10 minute 2 minute buzzer stop time.
  • 3rd period 12 minute 2 minute buzzer stop time.
  • Power skating and skill development sessions may be scheduled from time to time in regular practice times at no additional cost.

Players will receive a hockey jersey, socks, insurance, year-end party, award & pictures.

In the Atom division, the TCHL’s strong emphasis on skills development continues. The concepts of positional and team play are also reinforced, while players of like ability continue to play against each other in games.

  • Players are divided into three lines (A, B & C) based on these skills evaluations and teams are then formed.
  • Teams have one game and one practice per week.

  • Depending on the number of teams in this division, each team will rotate through the time slots for games and practices.
  • Games are 50 minutes in length.
  • 1st period 15 minutes running time.
  • 2nd period 15 minutes running time.
  • 3rd period 15 minutes running time.
  • Power skating and skill development sessions may be scheduled from time to time in regular practice times at no additional cost.

Players will receive a hockey jersey, socks, insurance, year-end party, award & pictures.

Developmental Overview

  • Players are evaluated according to ability at skills evaluations held at the start of the season.
  • Teams are formed so as to be as balanced as best as possible and will continue to be balanced until December.
  • Weekly practices are led by the team’s coaching staff.
  • There are a number of weekly practice & game hours for this division. Each team rotates through the time slots available. Two teams practice together weekly.
  • Each team plays a game once a week.
  • Games consist of 3 ten-minute stop time periods.
  • Full-time goalie positions are available in this division, but cannot be guaranteed. If there are more goalies than teams, goalies must share the position on as many teams as required.
  • Power skating and skill development sessions may be scheduled from time to time in regular practice times at no additional cost.

Full-Time Goalie Position

Beginning in the Peewee division, players may choose to become full-time goalies. In divisions where there are players who only want to play goal, the convenor shall ensure that these players are equally distributed among the teams. If there are more goalies than teams, the position must be shared equitably on as many teams as necessary to accommodate all goalies.

A full-time goalie position cannot be guaranteed as it is dependant on the number of players who want to play in net in a division in any given year. The division convenor will allocate goalies on as equitable a basis as possible among teams in the division.

Developmental Overview

  • Players are evaluated according to ability at skills evaluations held at the start of the season.
  • Teams are formed so as to be as balanced as best as possible and will continue to be balanced until December.
  • Teams participate in two weekly one-hour, on-ice sessions during the season. Schedules are provided at the start of the season.
  • Weekly practices are led by the team’s coaching staff.
  • There are a number of weekly practice hours for this division and each team rotates through the time slots available. Two teams practice together weekly.
  • Each team plays a game once a week.
  • Full-time goalie positions are available in this division. If there are more goalies than teams, goalies must share the position on as many teams as required.
  • There are a number of game times available for this division each week and each team rotates through the time slots available.

Full-Time Goalie Position

Bantam division only full-time goalies will be permitted to play in goals. If there are more goalies than teams, the position must be shared equitably on as many teams as necessary to accommodate all goalies.

Developmental Overview

  • Players in this division are evaluated according to ability at skills evaluations held at the start of the season.
  • Teams consisting of players from both the midget and juveniles divisions.
  • Each team plays a game once a week.
  • There are no practices in the Midget division.
  • Full-time goalie positions are available in this division. If there are more goalies than teams, goalies must share the position on as many teams as required.
  • There are a number of game times available at the arena for this division each week and each team rotates through the time slots available.

Full-Time Goalie Position

Midget division only full-time goalies will be permitted to play in goals. If there are more goalies than teams, the position must be shared equitably on as many teams as necessary to accommodate all goalies.

Our program schedule is finalized in mid-September and will be made available on the TCHL website. Please refer to last year’s program schedule as a guideline as we try to maintain consistency from year to year. However, you must be aware that this is subject to change based on ice allocation from the City and registrations numbers per division.
